Week 88: Delicious Treats

Posted on July 29, 2024July 29, 2024 By Ken Gaughan

The week started off with the headlines that President Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed VP Harris as Democratic nominee. Just weeks ago, the presidential race seemed like it was slated to be a boring run between Biden and Trump. Then, the debate drew attention to Biden’s cognitive ability to run the country for another 4-years. Then, the assassination attempt against Trump. Then, Trump officially selecting JD Vance as his VP choice. Now, Biden’s removed himself as the potential incumbent and poised the underwhelming Kamala Harris as the front runner. As if things couldn’t be anymore interesting, Israel’s Prime Minister, Netanyahu, addressed Congress to seek further support for Israel’s war efforts against Hamas while praising Trump and taking jabs at Democrats and pro-Palestinian protesters. Oh wait, the Summer Olympics kicked off in Paris with the controversial parody of da Vinci’s The Last Supper enacted by female impersonators that sparked outcry from Christians toward the French for permitting the mockery. It’s these types of headlines that catch the attention of inmates for them to throw “quick fix” solutions at concocted conspiratorial delusions. I find this banter comical, which thank goodness none of them are in any position to impact political decisions. Oh, I also keep my mouth shut at all times, especially when I hear something that is completely nonsensical or blatantly not true 🙂 Many guys take the bait and start expressing what they think is the most intelligible conversation to be had.

From my little home, I am happy to report that the air conditioning has been working great after last week’s out-of-service issue. I was able to focus my attention this week on the electrician apprenticeship. After having fixed several fans, commercial lights, floor buffers, and several plug outlets, I was able to enjoy a vanilla latte from the new cappuccino machine for the barista apprenticeship. The latte was absolutely delicious and rivaled Starbucks. Any and all coffee that is purchased through the commissary store is instant coffee, so any fresh ground and brewed coffee bean is bound to excite the taste buds. The latte was a true treat, but not the only one that I would have this week!

On Friday, the band played another graduation concert for the drug and alcohol program. We played four songs, which Warden Bayless, the treatment staff, and the graduates seemed to really enjoy. After the graduation ceremony, we indulged on brownies topped with peanut butter frosting and a freshly baked peanut butter cookie. The sugar spike was certainly well worth it, especially since these baked goods are not commonly available. Unfortunately, I was not chosen for the upcoming recidivism reducing class, but hopefully, I will be admitted in the November class. I remain the number one person who has waited the longest to begin this class! Overall, the week went really well for me, and I hope the same for you. As always, I appreciate you taking the time to check out my post and hopefully catch a glimpse into the culture of Morgantown prison camp. Have a great week and continue to look for a little miracle in your life 🙂
