Week 77: Mother Knows Best

Posted on May 19, 2024 By Ken Gaughan

What a sight it would be to see the Aurora Borealis without going north! This celestial spectacle occurred a few days this past week due to a solar storm. Unfortunately, I did not witness it for two reasons: 1. Lots of rain with cloud coverage, and 2. I have a curfew where I must be inside my living quarters around 8:30 pm. From the pictures that I’ve seen in the news, the rare glow was quite the experience.

With the spring season in full bloom, the wildlife here has been abounding: Ducklings, goslings, baby groundhogs, and kittens have been the newest residents on campus. New life arrives each day here, which is often the talk among guys when they see a new family by either commenting on how small the critters are or how many were counted. These families would not be possible without maternal fidelity. Sunday was Mother’s Day, which seems to be perfect for this time of year. My sincerest appreciation extends to all mothers for their multitude of sacrifices that they make for their young critters. The miracle of life continues to fascinate me, especially when I witness the various stages of the wildlife and reflecting on how humanity has advanced technologies to protect mothers and their most vulnerable. Mothers are protectors, caregivers, nurturers, mentors, leaders, providers, comforters (literally and figuratively), and so much more. All survival seems to hinge on successes of motherhood, which I may not have had time to really appreciate that notion without seeing the various stages of the growth cycle of these little creatures. Instinctually, mothers seemingly know what is best to rear the young.

This week was pretty much the same as the week before and the week before that. If the rain stopped, I played pickleball. Otherwise, it was a week of a lot of reading and working through my electrician apprenticeship. I wish that I had more to report, but it’s a good thing to have a week of status quo. I really appreciate your taking time to allow me to ramble and share some thoughts. Have a wonderful week and continue to look for any little miracle in your daily life. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, especially my mother and June!
