Week 68: In Like a Lamb

The weather has been unseasonably spectacular. I guess winter decided to have mercy on us here, just a few flurries and that was about it. I’ve been outside enjoying this beautiful weather…and getting a slight tan. This is the first tan (albeit a farmer’s one) that I’ve had without going to Florida in February/March.

Overall, the week flew by, especially since I’ve been busy with the electrician apprenticeship. Two fellow coworkers and I helped an officer move some heavy filing cabinets from one office to another office across the compound. We were able to use a “pick-up truck” or what was supposed to be a pick-up truck. We discovered that the vehicle was a large flatbed truck, which probably requires some commercial driver’s license certification to operate. The youngest guy wanted the opportunity to drive, which we knew would be eventful. After loading the three cabinets on the truck, we set out across the campus for the delivery. As we were proceeding up one hill, a semi-truck began to descend on the single lane road. The young coworker instinctually pulled to the side of the road to let the truck pass. However, he pulled too far off the road. The semi-truck flashed its lights for us to pass, so naturally, the young buck hit the gas…but our vehicle was now stuck in the soft ground. The young driver lacked the experience to rock the truck out of the rut that was now becoming deeper as he would push the gas pedal to the floor.

After waiting a few minutes, the semi-truck gave up waiting and passed us. The young gun asked us for help, which I replied that I would take the wheel. He persisted to fix the mess himself and asked what should be done through instruction. I told him that I would straighten the wheels and roll backwards using the gravity to move us out of the crater that he hastily created. So, he tried and failed, because he didn’t straighten the wheels although he was convinced they were since the steering wheel had the Dodge Ram logo facing upward. I tried convincing him that the steering wheel was just turned once or twice and needed to be straightened by fully turning the wheel. He couldn’t comprehend this task as he further buried the rear tires of the truck.

After about 5 minutes, several correctional officers showed up on the scene to witness the mess and offer their sage insights through laughs. The young guy was humiliated, even with his attempts to colorfully justify his mishap. Finally, I convinced him out of the driver’s seat and to get out and push with the other guys that have now descended on the scene. I straightened the wheel, put the truck in reverse, and with a 1-2-3 push, the truck easily nudged out of the mud and back onto the road. Then, we were able to finish the relocating the cabinets. However, we had more work to complete by filling in the tire tracks and fixing the mess. Oh, the flatbed truck was one of those trucks that had a total of ten large tires: two in the front, four in the mid section and four in the rear. We spent the rest of the day shoveling, raking, and stamping out the 30 feet of muck.

Biden gave a decent State of the Union address after Trump’s success in the Super Tuesday general elections. I don’t watch television, but I can only imagine the craziness of the political ads that must be roaring every commercial break, and even on social media. I wish you all wonderful and healthy week. Thank you for taking the time to catch-up on this blog. I appreciate all your continued support and love. Remember to look out for a little miracle in your life this week 🙂
